SWAHILI

Room for discovery

KARIBUNI KATIKA

ULIMWENGU WA KISWAHILI

Welcome to the world of Swahili.

I teach Swahili because I love what happens when language becomes a doorway to discovering another way of seeing the world.

Swahili is more than a language. It is a way into conversations, stories, cultures and connections across East Africa.

A LANGUAGE

THAT OPENS DOORS

SWAHILI LEVEL 2

Ready to move beyond the basics?

Elimu bila ya mtalaa hupotea.
Knowledge without practice is lost.

— Swahili proverb

In Level 2, we build on your existing knowledge and create more confidence in speaking, understanding and expressing yourself in Swahili.

We work with language in context, expanding vocabulary and grammar while exploring everyday situations, culture and communication.

A little more Swahili.

A lot more confidence.

ADVANCED SWAHILI

Haba na haba hujaza kibaba.
Little by little, we get there.

— Swahili proverb

For learners who want to go further.

This is a space to deepen your Swahili through conversation, reading, discussion and authentic material.

We move beyond exercises and textbooks and start engaging with Swahili as a living language.

READING SWAHILI

One novel.

One language.

Many worlds.

Together, we read a novel in Swahili.

We take the time to explore the language, the story and the cultural world behind the words. We read, discuss, question, translate, laugh, struggle and discover.

Because sometimes the best way to learn a language is simply to get lost in a good story.

SWAHILI IN ANOTHER SCRIPT

Before Swahili was written in the Latin alphabet, it was written in Arabic script

— a tradition known as Ajami.

Utenzi wa Hirqal / Swahili-poëzie in Ajami – The epic poem dates to 1728; this manuscript copy is from the 19th century.

WHAT I’M EXPLORING

Swahili, stories and the joy of learning together.

I’m currently teaching Swahili Level 2

and reading Rosa Mistika by Euphrase Kezilahabi (1944–2020)

with my reading group.

SWAHILI THROUGH ART

Swahili culture is not only carried through words and stories, but also through images, objects and imagination.

Here are a few artists and creative voices that invite us to look a little closer at the Swahili world.

WHY SWAHILI?

Kuwa na lugha nyingine ni kumiliki nafsi ya pili.

To have another language is to possess a second self.

— Swahili proverb

Swahili has been part of my own journey for many years.

What started as a language to learn became a way to connect with people, places, stories and cultures that continue to inspire me.

Through BLOOOM, I want to create a room where others can discover Swahili too — not only as a language to study, but as a language to experience.

ALSO TEACHING AT LINGUAPOLIS
I also teach Swahili Level 1 at Linguapolis, the language centre of the University of Antwerp.
